Thoughts on a Trump Presidency

People in the U. S. and around the world are watching with concern what actions Donald Trump will take when he assumes the office of President on the 20th.  Given the associations and statements of the people has has selected to assume the seats of power within his government, the trepidation felt by people have a basis in fact.

My feelings about the man are that he is the worst example of a spoiled brat: uncaring about anything other than his own desires, a belief that he is better than everyone else, a willingness to do anything (legal or not, moral or not, ethical or not) to advance himself.

Whether or not one agrees with the conservative political views that he has espoused, I do not believe this man has the moral character of someone who should be entrusted to the office of the Presidency.  However, he did win the election and like it or not, he will be sworn in as the next President of the United States thereby proving that one can fool all of the people some of the time.

I will be interested in seeing how the first days of his Presidency pass.  My feeling is that he will go back on many of his avowed actions, saying that he was misunderstood or some other excuse, just so he can do whatever seems to him to be the most expedient to advance his personal agenda.  So conservatives who helped elect him may well come to be disappointed in their candidate.

An example of this may be today’s reversal of the vote that was made by House Republicans to eliminate the independent House Ethics Review Committee.  As I read Mr. Trump’s tweets on this issue, he never stated he was actually against the elimination of this group — which caused a firestorm when a “secret” vote of the House Ethics Committee took this action yesterday — but that he felt there were many other more important actions that the House Republicans should be working on.   The news reports seem to be emphasizing that the decision was reversed due to Trump’s displeasure.

So Trump gains points for being “for” ethics (even though he really never said he was in favor) and he is seen to be able to exert some control over members of his party.  Certainly a win/win situation from his viewpoint.

I just hope that the situations he faces will almost always force him to disavow his conservative views in favor of political expediency.  If that is the case, we just might be able to survive his Presidency.
